The gift of organization

As we enter the season of gift giving, it is important to remember that sometimes we also have to give ourselves gifts. As a professional organizer, I have seen firsthand the amazing gifts that come from taking time to simplify and organize your home. Organizing goes beyond simply tidying up a space or making a to-do list. When you give yourself the gift of organization, you give yourself less stress, more time to do the things that bring you joy, more money, and a greater sense of control over one's life.

Increased Joy

There are many benefits to taking time to get organized. For starters, when you live or work in a space that is organized and clutter free, you are able to better focus and have more of a sense of calm. One study found that women who described their living spaces as cluttered or full of unfinished projects were more likely to be fatigued and depressed than women who described their homes as restful and restorative. Researchers also found that the women with messy or cluttered homes had higher levels of cortisol.

Save Money

Time is money, and there is no doubt that getting and staying organized can help you save precious time. When everything in your house has a “home”, you can easily find what you need without wasting time trying to find your keys for the 12th time today. When things are organized you can keep better tabs on what you have and what you need so you don’t buy unnecessary items. This helps you save money and reduce your food waste since you will be more likely to use what you have in the pantry when it is easy to see. Being organized can also save you money because it can prevent you from forgetting to pay a bill or other costly mistakes.

More Control

Another benefit of being organized is that it can lead to better time management. By having a clear idea of what needs to be done and when, it's easier to prioritize tasks and avoid procrastination. This can free up time for activities that bring joy and fulfillment. When you are organized, all your daily chores and routines will happen faster because you have a system. This also means you likely have better routines in place to help you eat healthier and get more sleep!

The gift of organization is one that can have a profound impact on a person's life. By taking small steps to declutter, establish systems, and manage time effectively, it's possible to reap the benefits of increased productivity, reduced stress, and greater control over one's life.
